The name of the country is derived from the Namib Desert, considered to be the oldest desert in the world. The Namib sand dunes are consistently shifting with the wind. Sossusvlei is a large salt and clay pan, surrounded by high red dunes, that is one of the major visitor attractions of Namibia. The park’s main characteristic is a salt pan so large it can be seen from space.
