Lockhyd is facilitated by means of a comprehensive CAD design system. Lockhyd were established in 1986 and since then, much equipment was supplied to the power generation, mining, industrial and agricultural equipment industries. Lockhyd Industrial Hydraulics was formed in 1986 as the result of a decision of the Automotive Products Group to dis-invest in the Republic of South Africa. The Manager of the Lockhyd Industrial Hydraulics division of Automotive Products Group, Mr. Neville McCallum, the incumbent Manager of the Industrial Hydraulics Division of AP, as it was then known, when hearing of the planned closure the division, proposed a Management buy out, to fulfill the need for continuing support of the substantial amount of Lockhyd equipment already in use in the country. This would also serve to rescue staff members, and himself, from looming retrenchment. The offer was duly accepted by AP, and Lockhyd Industrial Hydraulics came into existence, with Mr. McCallum becoming the Managing Director of the new Company. The mid-nineties saw the patenting and development of the pneumatic mill loading cylinder (commonly referred to as the bag cylinder), which has positioned the Company very favourably to supply equipment, incorporating up to date technology, to the Power Generation and Cement Manufacturing industries, among others. A license agreement exists with a British associate, to manufacture and market these products in the U.K., and other parts of the world where Babcock, ball type, vertical spindle, pulverizing mills are used. Manufacturing and repair facilities, allow for manufacture, or repair, of a wide variety of hydraulic, or pneumatic cylinders. Maintenance and repair of our various ranges of hydraulic valves, pumps and control systems can be carried out to the manufacturer’s specifications. General engineering repair and maintenance work can also be handled in our large, well equipped facility. Specialized, purpose designed tools for site installations, manufacturing and repair work. Hydraulic Cylinders and What They Do Ever wonder just how some of that high powered, heavy duty engineering equipment or vehicles work? I’m talking about bulldozer, tractors, cranes and trucks that pull, push, lift, haul, move, the systems power, crush and drill in countless big operations. They harness enormous amounts of power to handle heavy loads in all kinds of ways. Hydraulic Cylinder Properties: Hydraulic cylinders are made up of four main parts, they include the outside casing which is called a barrel and is usually made of stainless steel, a piston, rod, gland, and butt. The piston is an integral part of the hydraulic system because it gives the cylinder force. The rod is a long strong piece of steel that is exposed to the fluid path, which means it needs to, therefore, be exceptionally corrosion resistant. The rod then extends and retracts through the gland, which is the front part of the hydraulic cylinder. Lastly, the butt is located at the base or end of the cylinder, and it is usually the part that attaches to other hydraulic system components, which include pumps, valves, and motors. Hydraulic Cylinder Functionality: The oil is held in a basin, and when the system is active, it is shot through the cylinder under great pressure.
