Like most South African cities and towns, Kempton Park has humble beginnings and a colourful history. In the following article we will trace the origins and adventures of Kempton Park’s founder, Mr. Carl Wolff. After school and an early training in the iron and steel industry in Germany, Mr. Wolff immigrated to London. In 1875 the company that he worked for transferred him to South Africa where he took charge of the accounting division of the company in the Port Elizabeth branch. A few years later he was moved up to Bloemfontein, and it was there that he met and married Maria Fichardt, a granddaughter of the noted missionary Carl Wuras. Steadily persisting in his journey north, Wolff was transferred to Pretoria so as to found a branch office there. Because of his German origin and his leadership abilities, Carl Friedrich Wolff was an obvious choice as a mediator for the South African Government during their interactions with the Nobel Trust, who were building a dynamite factory in South Africa. The Nobel Company had complete financial control over everything regarding the dynamite factory, and it is believed that Wolff's major role was as a negotiator with the South African government and the local landowners. He played a prominent role during the establishment of the dynamite factory and the delicate negotiations which evolved due to the private rail link from the factory to Zuurfontein Farm. The Gold Rush was well under way in the Witwatersrand by this time, and dynamite (and consequently a dynamite factory) was a crucial industrial requirement. Up in what was then the Transvaal land speculation was widespread, a strong community was being developed, and Mr. Carl Wolff was right in the heart of it all. He decided to sub-divided a section of his Zuurfontein farm into residential plots in 1903, and Kempton Park was born. The city is still a wonderful place to live and raise a family.
